My grandfather was a charismatic guy right. As small kids, we were
tickled by his dramatic and passionate way his of expression. He loved
to narrate stories of pre-independent (1940s and 1950s).This was
largely about the occupation of the White Highlands (today Central
Kenya) by the Whiteman (Mzungu)
as known by the rural folks. However, when the struggle for
independence started, there was a myth, that the Whiteman was immortal.
Let me rest at that point for now.

The brinkmanship made sense in the old days of global bipolar
confrontations allowing the USA and USSR (Soviet Union) to use the
threat of annihilation to play games with one another in their battles
to retain sphere of global influence. But it was as dangerous as it was
expensive. The superpowers paid a very heavy price, having to run huge
and unsustainable budget deficits year in year out. In the process
diverting billions into accumulating nuclear arsenals they did not need.
